Gumdrop candy essential oil blend

To me, essential oil blends that smell like candy and baked goods are by far the most fun to make.

With the right combination of oils, you can create an array of delicious, edible-smelling scents, from sugar cookie to sugar plum (and everything in between!).

Sure, you could use a candy fragrance oil to achieve some of these gourmand aromas. But with so many natural materials at your disposal, there’s no need to risk your health with synthetic fragrances. You just need to know which essential oils to use.

Read on to learn how to make gumdrop essential oil, along with several other blends that smell like candy!

I’ve included essential oil recipes for classic gumdrop flavors like lemon, lime, grape, and orange, plus unique scents like tropical, bubblegum, and pink gumdrop.

There’s also a special gumdrop cookie blend inspired by my grandma’s recipe – it smells like candy mixed with buttery shortbread cookies!

Afterwards, you can add your blend to homemade skincare products like body butter or lip balm. Or, use it in aromatherapy recipes or in your diffuser to fragrance your home with a sweet gumdrop scent. Kids will love this one.

These essential oil blends are sure to make your home smell like a candy shop, but if you want to smell like candy yourself, see my sugar plum perfume recipe.

What do gumdrops smell like?

Before making any essential oil blend, there’s obviously an important question to keep in mind. So, what exactly does a gumdrop candy smell like?

Gumdrops have a sweet, sugary scent, but their aroma depends on their color.

The most popular gumdrop flavors are cherry, orange, grape, and lemon, along with spices like cinnamon, mint, clove, and anise (also called spice drops).

But those are just the classic flavors – then there’s the fun variations. For instance, a tropical gumdrop mix includes exotic flavors like wild mango, grapefruit, and melon, which adds even more possibilities to the mix.

How do you make a candy scent?

So, how exactly do you make a natural gumdrop fragrance? By combining sugary, fruity essential oils for whatever gumdrop flavor you’d like.

The main benefit of using essential oils is their aromatherapeutic benefits. Unfortunately, you won’t get any aromatherapy from an artificial candy fragrance oil!

You’d be surprised at which essential oil combinations can create candy scents. Mixing essential oil blends is just another form of perfumery – it’s all about percentages, aroma compounds, and how each fragrance works together.

And often, oils with particularly strong fragrances can smell completely different when mixed with other oils.

We all know that essential oils like grapefruit, sweet orange, blood orange and lime smell sweet, but they’re not the only ones.

Take eucalyptus, for instance – it’s very medicinal on its own, but when paired with the right ratios of citrus and ylang ylang, it smells like bubblegum.

Ylang-ylang is another sweet-smelling essential oil that can smell like candy in the right combination (like a cotton candy blend).

Gumdrop essential oil that smells like candy

I tested quite a few blends to come up with some fun gumdrop flavors. Unfortunately some ended up smelling more like cough drops than gumdrops, but that’s the fun of experimenting!

12 blends made the final cut, plus a special gumdrop cookie blend with natural perfumery oils that smells absolutely mouthwatering.

But there’s a few essential oils in particular that are most important, so before we get into the recipes, I’ll go into a bit more detail on those. But feel free to skip to straight to the blends.

The essential oil that smells like gumdrops

This post was inspired by Simply Earth’s Citrus Burst essential oil blend, which came with our monthly essential oil subscription box.

They might as well have called this blend Gumdrop, because that’s the first thing I thought of when I smelled it. I knew I had to use it to make some fun candy essential oil blends.

As an added bonus, this cheery and uplifting blend is perfect for energizing aromatherapy.

Simply Earth’s Citrus Burst, the essential oil blend that smells like gumdrops

I love Simply Earth and their fun, edible-smelling oils. Aside from Citrus Burst, a few more of my favourites include:

  • Tranquility Blend: smells like fruit loops or fruity pebbles
  • Vanilla Woods Blend: smells like rich vanilla syrup
  • Candy Cane Blend: smells like sugary, minty candy canes
  • Lava Blend: smells like tropical fruit, candy, and expensive perfume

If you like the idea of essential oils arriving at your door every month, check out their monthly box – it includes 4 full-size oils and 6 homemade recipes, plus the ingredients required to make them.

If you’re interested, you can use our code “ALIFEADJACENTFREE” to get a $40 gift card with your first box (plus a free Bonus Box!).

But if not, all oils are also sold separately, including the gumdrop-scented Citrus Burst. See our full Simply Earth review here.

Essential oils that smell like candy

So, which essential oils smell like candy? Here are some of the main oils I used in these gumdrop candy blends:

  • Citrus Burst essential oil: A zesty blend of 5 citrus oils – lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, and bergamot. It’s the perfect balance of citrus and sweetness, which makes it smell so much like gumdrops.
  • Sweet orange essential oil: Sweet orange oil’s intensely sweet and fruity aroma is a no-brainer for candy essential oil recipes. (It’s also key for creating a cola essential oil blend.)
  • Vanilla Woods essential oil: This cost-effective vanilla substitute blends vanilla oleoresin with Peru balsam and benzoin. It has a sweet and balsamic aroma that smells like vanilla syrup.
  • Love essential oil: This delicate blend of ylang-ylang, amyris, and citrus oils smells like candy out of the bottle. It also makes a lovely aromatherapy perfume.
  • Lava essential oil: This fruity blend smells like candy and tropical fruit, so it’s perfect for a tropical gumdrop scent.
  • Bitter almond essential oil: This potent, sweet-smelling specialty essential oil does not live up to its name, because it smells like sugar straight out of the bottle. (Also use it to make a DIY perfume that smells like candy!)

To make the gumdrop cookie blend, you will also need a couple more specialty perfumery oils:

  • Tonka bean absolute: Sweet, rich and slightly spicy, tonka bean adds notes of caramel, oatmeal cookies, and spiced baked goods to the gumdrop cookie scent.
  • Butter co2 extract: This natural gourmand perfumery ingredient adds a rich and buttery aroma like movie theatre popcorn. I usually use in my homemade perfumes, but it’s also perfect for creating realistic essential oil blends that smell like cookies and baked goods.

Candy essential oil blends

Below are 12 gumdrop essential oil recipes that smell like candy, plus a special gumdrop cookie blend.

I tried to provide options for everyone’s budget and essential oil collection, so you’ll find that some blends contain specialty oils, and some blends do not.

I used a few Simply Earth blends, but they’re inexpensive and far more cost effective than buying each individual oil. Plus, the benefit of bottled blends is that each oil has already been pre-blended in a specific ratio, which is key for creating certain fragrances.

For more candy scents, see my bubblegum, cotton candy and caramel essential oil blends.

And for some more unique, sweet-smelling recipes I haven’t covered, check out this fun list of sweet essential oil blends from Everything Pretty.

Gumdrop

3 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
3 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
3 drops Love essential oil

If you’re looking for a simple gumdrop scent, I think this one is the best. It’s fruity and sweet, and smells like sticking your nose into a whole mixed bag of gumdrop flavors at once. Makes a great candy diffuser blend!

Alternatively, if you don’t have Citrus Burst, you can make this blend:

1 drop lemon essential oil
1 drop lime essential oil
1 drop grapefruit essential oil
1 drop sweet orange essential oil
1 drop bergamot essential oil

Goody Goody Gumdrops

5 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
5 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
2 drops bitter almond essential oil

This ultra-sweet candy essential oil blend smells sweeter than plain gumdrop. It contains bitter almond oil, a specialty oil that smells like sugar and marzipan, for an extra burst of sweetness.

Gumdrop fragrance oil

Tropical Gumdrop

3 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
3 drops Lava essential oil
2 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil

With notes of blood orange, grapefruit, and a hint of sweet ylang-ylang, this unique EO recipe smells like tropical flavored candy.

Pink Gumdrop

3 drops pink grapefruit essential oil
3 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
2 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
1 drop bitter almond essential oil

With its sweet and topical aroma, this pink gumdrop fragrance smells like candy and pink fruits, with notes of grapefruit, guava, and sugared berries. An undertone of bubblegum completes the “pink” fragrance.

I think this one would make an amazing candy perfume or body spray.

Bubblegum Gumdrop

6 drops ylang ylang essential oil
5 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
5 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
1 drop eucalyptus essential oil

Something magical happens when you mix a small amount of eucalyptus oil with ylang-ylang and citrus. This sweet essential oil blend has notes of bubblegum, gumdrops, and cotton candy!

Blend inspired by this bubblegum-scented soap.

Orange Gumdrop

3 drops sweet orange essential oil
2 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
2 drop Love essential oil

Fruity and sweet, this blend combines citrus and a small amount of ylang-ylang for an orange candy gumdrop scent. You can use either sweet orange oil or blood orange oil, which will give it more of a tropical fragrance.

Grape Gumdrop

5 drops benzoin essential oil
4 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
3 drop sweet orange essential oil
2 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil

Benzoin has a sweet, unique aroma. I’ve always thought it had an undertone of grape candy or flavoring, so it was perfect for evoking the scent of grape gumdrops.

Cinnamon Gumdrop

6 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
2 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
1 drop cassia essential oil
1 drop ylang ylang essential oil

I prefer gumdrops to spice drops, but this candy essential oil blend is a lovely combination of sweet and spicy. Cassia is sweeter than cinnamon, so it doesn’t overwhelm the blend with spice. It smells like cinnamon gumdrops or Valentine’s cinnamon candy hearts.

Natural candy fragrance oil

Lemon Gumdrop

3 drops Tranquility essential oil
2 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
1 drop Vanilla Woods essential oil

This blend smells like lemon gumdrops, but it’s not the least bit sour. Simply Earth’s Tranquility blend has a unique scent like fruity cereal, and when mixed with citrus oils, it smells like lemon candy.

Spearmint Gumdrop

6 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
5 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
2 drops spearmint essential oil
1 drop bitter almond essential oil

If you like mint gumdrops, this is the blend for you. It combines spearmint with some sweetening oils for a mint candy fragrance.

You can also replace the spearmint with 1 drop of wintergreen oil, if you prefer wintergreen’s sweeter aroma. But please don’t use peppermint – it smells too medicinal in this blend.

Lime Gumdrop

5 drops lime essential oil
2 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
6 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil

This zesty blend is for lime gumdrop lovers! Lime adds the zest, and Vanilla Woods sweetens it up.

Liquorice Gumdrop

3 drops star anise essential oil
2 drops Citrus Burst essential oil
2 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil

If you love liquorice gumdrops, this sweet and aromatic blend creates a liquorice candy scent.

12 drops butter CO2 extract
7 drops tonka bean absolute
5 drops Vanilla Woods essential oil
2 drops bitter almond essential oil
1 drop Citrus Burst essential oil
1 drop sweet orange essential oil

Inspired by my grandma’s gumdrop shortbread cookies, this gumdrop cookie blend combines the scents of – you guessed it – gumdrops and butter cookies.

Gumdrop cookie essential oil recipe

It blends Citrus Burst with my buttery sugar cookie essential oil blend for a deliciously sweet, realistic cookie scent.

The secret? Gourmand perfumery oils – vanilla, tonka bean, bitter almond, and butter co2 extract, an ingredient that smells like real butter (it’s basically butter essential oil!).

The blend smells like real gumdrop cookies, right down to the fatty, buttery notes and the sweetness of vanilla cookie dough. Hopefully it won’t give you a toothache.

You can also add one drop of cassia oil or cinnamon leaf oil for a spicier cookie scent, like spiced gumdrop cookies.

How to make candy essential oil blends

  1. Remove the dropper top from your clean essential oil bottle. Those droppers can be tricky, so an essential oil bottle opener tool can come in handy.
  2. To make your candy essential oil, carefully dispense each oil into your bottle. Feel free to double or even quadruple each oil if you’d like to make more than a single use amount.
  3. Replace the dropper top and swirl your bottle gently to combine the essential oils.
  4. Your gumdrop essential oil blend is finished. It’s ready to use right away, but its fragrance will develop even more over the next couple weeks as the aroma compounds intermingle. If it smells amazing now, it’ll smell even better in a week or so.
  5. Apply your free printable label, if desired.
  6. Use your essential oil in homemade skincare recipes such as bath bombs, body butter, lip balm, or melt and pour soap. Or, use it as a natural candy fragrance oil for aromatherapy products, such as gumdrop scented candles or room spray.

Tips for blending candy essential oils

  • If you’re going to add your gumdrop scented oil to any DIY bath and body recipes, please do not exceed 2% fragrance concentration to ensure skin safety. And if using this blend on your skin, please be aware that certain citrus oils (like the bergamot in Citrus Burst) have photosensitizing properties.
  • Always choose an amber glass bottle for your homemade essential oil blends to protect the fragile oils from light.
  • Please note that sticky oleoresins, like the Peru balsam in the Vanilla Woods blend, can stain diffusers and stick to bottles. Take caution when using these oils.
  • For a gumdrop diffuser blend to make your home smell like candy, please omit the bitter almond oil, which is not suitable for aromatherapy. And please be careful with Vanilla Woods, as Peru balsam is sticky and may stain your diffuser.
  • However, you can use any of the candy blends in a passive diffuser, as long as it doesn’t nebulize the essential oils directly into the air. But again, be aware of potential staining with Vanilla Woods.
  • Please note that while this gumdrop essential oil recipe smells edible, it’s not. Please do not consume!
