DIY chocolate and roses tub tea recipe

Tub teas are one of my favourite bath and body DIY’s due to their simplicity. You can easily make this chocolate and rose petal tub tea recipe in less than ten minutes. So if you’re new to DIY bath products, this simple recipe is a great starting point.

The scent of this DIY tub tea is both decadent and floral thanks to the combination of chocolate essential oil, cacao tea and dried rose petals. Roses and chocolate may be a cliché combination, but you can’t deny that their aromas complement each other very well.

I think this romantic chocolate and roses tub tea would be equally wonderful to either enjoy alone, or with a special someone! Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, after all.

Ingredients for DIY chocolate and roses tub tea

Epsom salt

The main ingredient in this tub tea is Epsom salt. Epsom salt, a compound of magnesium and sulfate, is easily absorbed through the skin. This makes bathing in Epsom salts an ideal way to help get your daily dose of magnesium.

Since magnesium deficiency is associated with various unpleasant conditions such as migraines, hormonal imbalance, and other health issues, it’s important to get enough. Chronic stress or traumatic experiences can also contribute to the depletion of magnesium, so bathing in tub teas made with Epsom salts provides a pleasant solution to help mitigate magnesium deficiency.

Epsom salts are also often recommended to treat tired, achy muscles and to ease the inflammation caused by minor injuries or arthritis.

Remember that it’s important to use the appropriate amount of magnesium for your body weight, especially if you want to use this tub tea to supplement your daily dose. You can easily adjust the amount of Epsom salts in this tub tea as follows:

For children under 60 lbs – 1/2 cup of Epsom salts is required.

For children 60-100 lbs – 3/4 – 1 cup of magnesium per bath.

For Adults 100-150 lbs – 1 1/2 cups per bath.

For those 150-200 lbs – use 2 cups per bath.

For those 200+ lbs, use an extra 1/2 cup for every 50 additional pounds.

Himalayan pink salt

Himalayan salts have a plethora of skin benefits. They are both antibacterial and antiseptic which makes them ideal for treating a variety of ailments. As well, sea salts can boost circulation, help ease bloating and leave your skin glowing. They also contain many trace minerals such as calcium, chloride, magnesium and potassium which are readily absorbed during bathing.

Organic milk powder

Most people have heard of celebrities bathing in copious amounts of milk. Even Cleopatra herself was rumoured to have kept her skin supple by indulging in milk baths sprinkled with rose petals. However, since likely no one around here is a celebrity or Egyptian queen that can afford to bathe in gallons of milk, I have included organic powered milk in this recipe rather than the real deal.

Adding powered milk to your bath water can provide gentle exfoliation for your skin due to the lactic acid found in milk. Lactic acid is a natural alpha hydroxy acid which of course is used in a variety of skincare products, since AHA’s stimulate cell turnover and renewal.

Cacao absolute

Cacao absolute, or chocolate essential oil, has an incredibly potent dark chocolate scent. Its aroma can be compared to the finest, most expensive chocolate money can buy – no exaggeration. Who doesn’t love the smell of deep, dark chocolate? However, proceed with caution if you tend towards sensitivity. Although, I have sensitive skin and regularly use DIY bath and body products containing cacao absolute with no issues whatsoever.

Cacao tea

Cacao tea is rich in antioxidants and minerals like magnesium that are great for skin health. When steeped, it creates a rich and flavorful tea that smells and tastes like – you guessed it – chocolate. It’s probably even more beneficial to sip some cacao tea while bathing, as it’s one of the most antioxidant rich foods!

Another benefit to using cacao tea is that it is sustainable, as it’s derived from cacao husk, which is often a waste product of chocolate making.

Cacao tea also helps impart even more rich chocolate fragrance into this tub tea if you don’t want to include the cacao absolute.

Rose petals

There’s something very luxurious about bathing in flower petals. The fragrance of rose petals is uplifting, soothing, and synonymous with romance. While roses are known for their astringent, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties, the roses included in this recipe are mostly for adding a lovely fragrance and for making your tub tea look prettier. And for an even more intoxicating rose fragrance, you can also add a few drops of rose essential oil to this recipe.

What You'll Need

  • In a large glass bowl, mix 1/2 cup powdered milk with the cacao tea, dried rose petals and salts. Mix well.
  • Add the essential oils and thoroughly mix your ingredients again.
  • Scoop the tub tea mixture into reusable muslin bags or tea bags. Tie tightly. Alternatively, you can store your tub tea in mason jars and scoop the tub tea into your muslin bags shortly before use. This is an ideal way to gift your tub tea as the recipient can enjoy the beauty of the dried roses before using their tub tea. Just add a bow to your mason jars for gifting.
  • To use, steep your tea for a few minutes in hot bathwater before using. You can also place the tea bag directly under the running bathwater if you prefer. The water should be hot enough to steep the tea, but be sure to test the temperature again before climbing in the tub.
  • After use, place the contents of the tub tea into your compost or organics bin. Wash and reuse your muslin bags again for your next bath!

While this tub tea is likely safe for most, some people may be allergic to one or more ingredients. Always use essential oils with caution, and to be safe, consult your health care provider before using any DIY skin products, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you suffer from any health condition such as high or low blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult with your doctor before using salt baths.

Bathing in a tub tea blend that includes a variety of skin-benefiting ingredients can be a relaxing addition to your self-care routine. Additionally, indulging in an evening bath that includes Epsom salt can help promote a more restful sleep.

I believe this tub tea would be lovely for use on Valentine’s Day or as bridesmaid gifts, wedding or baby shower favours, or as a thoughtful, eco-friendly hostess gift for the bath lover in your life. Just add a bow to your mason jars and include muslin bags with each gift. This could also be a fun, yet easy project for your guests to make at a birthday party, or at a wedding shower.
