Who is Simply Earth?
Simply Earth is a family-owned essential oil company located in Hingham, Wisconsin that sells high quality, pure, and affordable essential oils. Most importantly, their oils are also lab tested and ethically sourced.
As with any company, one of the first things you may be asking is – is Simply Earth legit? And the answer is yes, they are a legitimate company.
But with so many brands to choose from, what makes them any different?
What makes Simply Earth different from other companies?
In our opinion, there are a few things that set Simply Earth apart from other essential oil companies.
First, they pride themselves on honesty and transparency – they promise to provide the purest essential oils on Earth because they want to help their customers live a more toxin-free life.
How do they achieve this? Each batch of Simply Earth essential oils is GC/MS tested. And with so many counterfeit, adulterated essential oils on the market, this kind of testing is extremely important. We’ll explain more about what this testing means below.
Another thing that makes Simply Earth different is their dedication to a good cause. They’re a company that gives back, donating 13% of profits to fight against human trafficking. You can learn more about this pledge here.

But perhaps what makes Simply Earth stand out the most is their monthly Essential Oil Recipe Box, which offers 4 full-size essential oils and tons of fun extra ingredients, shipped to your door every month at an affordable price.
We’ve now received 5 years’ worth of monthly boxes and essential oils, so our opinion comes from our own personal experience.

We’ll get into all this in more depth below, so now, let’s get back into the detailed review.
Are Simply Earth Essential Oils Pure?
First, one of the most important questions of any essential oils review – are Simply Earth oils pure?
As we mentioned, Simply Earth works hard to source pure essential oils from small, ethical farms around the world. In fact, their objective is to meet the farmers, learn more about their process, and witness the commitment to quality for themselves.
So yes, you can be assured that Simply Earth’s essential oils are 100% pure, and they prove it with GC/MS testing.

But while purity is important, we’ve also found there’s a tangible difference in aroma, as well, which is another quality that distinguishes Simply Earth oils from other well-known essential oil brands.
When compared to similar oils from another company, many of Simply Earth’s oils just smell better. Even their dark patchouli oil, which can be a divisive fragrance, is the most pleasant we’ve ever smelled.
They also offer some truly unique bottled essential oil blends, such as Lava, a sweet, slightly smoky blend which smells like a high-end citrus perfume. You will find more information about our favorite Simply Earth blends later in this article.
Of course, you can’t always trust your nose to determine purity, which is why Simply Earth oils also have the test results to prove it.
What does it mean for essential oils to be GC/MS Tested?
GC/MS or Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry is a standard test that can be used to ascertain an essential oil’s identity and quality. It’s the gold standard for ensuring a substance’s purity.
In the very simplest of terms, a gas chromatograph is used to identify and separate each molecule in the essential oil, then a mass spectrometer will analyze and provide information about each individual compound.
Most importantly, GC/MS testing will reveal if any substance has been added or removed from the pure essential oil.
All Simply Earth essential oils go through this extensive third-party GC/MS testing and review, and due to this rigorous process, they can guarantee that the oils they sell are free of fillers, synthetic fragrances, or other adulterants.
For each batch of oil, Simply Earth also makes the GC/MS report available on the product page. For instance, on this page for rosemary essential oil, you will find the oil’s GC/MS report. You can also view the report for a specific Simply Earth essential oil batch by searching the bottle’s serial number.
For an in-depth explanation of GC/MS testing, see this article.
Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box Review
As we mentioned, aside from selling individual oils, Simply Earth’s flagship is their monthly essential oil subscription box.
The monthly cost of each subscription box is again only $44.99, and you get your first box for $35.99. Considering the actual value of each box is well over $100, this is an amazing deal.
So, what do you get with a Simply Earth Essential Oil Recipe Box?

While we showed you the 2025 Hair Care box above, every month you receive 4 different oils, which is a wonderful way to start (or expand) your essential oil collection. (After 5 years of boxes, we’ve amassed quite a variety of oils, including some rare ones!)
Each month, along with 4 full-size essential oils, you’ll also receive:
- 6 non-toxic and natural recipes on recipe cards
- The ingredients needed for the recipes
- Containers to store the recipes
- Pre-cut sticker labels for your essential oils creations
Plus, Simply Earth boxes often include one of their unique essential oil blends. We look forward to these, as they are expertly blended and often contain expensive oils such as sandalwood, neroli and helichrysum.
Some boxes have even included pricey full-sized oils such as cardamom oil. So the price of each monthly box is much less than buying each individual essential oil and all the supplies.
Each month is also centred around a different theme – for instance, past box themes have included Natural Beauty, DIY Skincare, Rest and Relaxation, and Natural Cleaning, to name a few.
You can check out some of the Simply Earth essential oil recipes we’ve created using past boxes and oils:
- DIY Hair Growth Serum and Essential Oil Hair Masks – Hair Care Box
- Aura Cleansing Spray – Energy Guards + Mindfulness Box
- Spring Aromatherapy Perfumes – Mood Detox Box
- DIY Deodorant Sprays – Personal Hygiene Box
- Rose Soap Recipes – Natural Cleaning Box
- DIY Pillow Spray – Rest and Relaxation Box
- DIY Skin Healing Gel – Winter Wellness Box
- Calendula Bug Repellent Balm – Summer and Garden Box
- DIY Fall Candles – Spa Day Box
- DIY Christmas Soap Recipes – Holiday Soap Box

Another Monthly Box Preview
Want another preview of what you can expect in a box? While you can find the May 2025 box sneak peek above, here’s another past box to help you make your decision.
The theme of this box was Family-Friendly, so it included a selection of recipes using oils safe for the whole family.

Essential oils found in this box:
- Homebody Essential Oil Blend. This blend was formulated by the aromatherapists at Simply Earth to be safe for the whole family, including kids and pets. Homebody is a calming blend of amyris (woody, vanilla-like aroma), copaiba (honey-like scent), ho wood (floral, woody and camphorous aroma) and vetiver (herbaceous, smokey, and earthy fragrance).
- Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil. An uplifting and energizing citrus oil with a sweet, crisp aroma. Grapefruit oil is known to help boost mood, promote focus, and reduce cravings.
- Spearmint Essential Oil. An uplifting and stimulating oil that can help reduce fatigue, improve digestion and quell nausea – perfect for family road trips.
- Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil. This oil has a pleasant, gentle woodsy aroma with sedative and relaxing qualities.

Simply Earth’s Family-Friendly box included the following recipes:
- Lavender Hydrosol Spray
- Self-Care Lotion
- Road Trip Roll-On
- Homebody Carpet Powder
- Hospitality Diffuser Blend
- Mama Inhaler
The subscription box extras:
- Pre-cut recipe stickers to label your essential oil recipes
- Lotion base – this is also part of Simply Earth’s natural homemade lotion kit
- Aluminum inhaler to take your blends on-the-go
- Lavender hydrosol spray – offers the same benefits as lavender essential oil, but it’s water based which makes it more gentle. Use it to make a relaxing lavender spray for skincare, home, and body. You can also use it to make a lavender pillow spray.
As you can see, each box is already a great value. But remember when you subscribe, you also get a FREE Big Bonus Box.
What is the Big Bonus Box?
The Bonus Box is free with your Simply Earth Recipe Box subscription, and it’s jam packed with ingredients and useful supplies to make the natural essential oil recipes included in each box.

So, what’s in the Simply Earth Big Bonus Box? Each box includes:
- Almond Oil

Simply Earth Essential Oil Blends
As mentioned, Simply Earth offers many unique, expertly crafted blends made by certified aromatherapists. Here are some of our favorites we’ve received in past boxes:
- BO Be Gone: This incredible blend of lavender, orange, patchouli, ylang ylang, and sandalwood essential oils is perfect for natural deodorant and for removing smells from laundry. Though it was formulated as a gender-neutral blend to combat body odor, don’t let the name fool you. It’s also wonderful for hair and personal care.
- Love: This sweet, sultry blend of ylang-ylang, amyris, and citrus promotes feelings of affection, love, and romance. It also makes a wonderful essential oil perfume or homemade candle scent.
- Timber: A woodsy, masculine blend that’s perfect for a DIY men’s cologne. Because it’s so incredibly long lasting, it also works amazingly in essential oil gel air fresheners.
- Beauty Within: Perfect for hair masks, this blend of antibacterial, anti-fungal oils helps promote scalp and hair health while also stimulating hair growth. These same qualities also make it ideal for nails and DIY cuticle oil.
- Lava: An uplifting citrus blend with a hint of smokiness that makes a lovely aromatherapy perfume. We think it smells like a designer fragrance, only without the headache!
- Bumps and Boo-boos: This soothing blend for minor irritation, scrapes and other skin issues can be used in skin healing gel, burn salve and other calming recipes.
- Tranquility: This unique and fruity essential oil blend smells like gumdrops. It also contains calming, grounding oils such as ylang-ylang and amyris to promote relaxation and calm.
- Sleepy: The perfect lavender blend to diffuse for sleep or to include in a pillow spray. Unlike other lavender blends, it’s not overly floral, blending lavender’s calming benefits with citrus fruit to mellow out its herbal qualities.

More questions about Simply Earth
Is Simply Earth an MLM?
No, Simply Earth is not an MLM. There’s no requirement to sell, and no pressure to recruit your friends or family.
Since Simply Earth sources pure oils directly from small farms in small batches, bottle the oils at their own facility, and then sell those oils directly to their customers with no middle man.
This is how Simply Earth is able to charge far less than many other big essential oil companies, while still providing high-quality and pure essential oils to their customers.
How do Simply Earth prices compare to other essential oil brands?
The prices of Simply Earth oils compare favorably to other well-known brands. For instance, here is how 15ml of lavender, peppermint, cedarwood and blue tansy essential oils from Simply Earth compare to similar oils from other popular essential oil companies.
The price difference between Simply Earth vs Young Living is staggering, for example – and when it comes to blue tansy, downright shocking.
Lavender Essential Oil Price Comparison
- Young Living $43.42
- doTERRA $37.33
- Simply Earth $13.99
Peppermint Essential Oil Price Comparison
- Young Living $39.47
- doTERRA $33.33
- Simply Earth $12.99
Cedarwood Essential Oil Price Comparison
- Young Living $20.72
- doTERRA $20
- Simply Earth $9.99
Blue Tansy Essential Oil Price Comparison
- Young Living $168.75
- doTERRA $114.67
- Simply Earth $19.99
Simply Earth Oils vs doTERRA
Other essential oil brands might be more well-known and popular, but that doesn’t make them better than Simply Earth oils. Simply Earth provides high-quality and pure essential oils directly from farms, without a middleman, which saves you money.
Plus, the lack of pressure to sell Simply Earth essential oils is an important consideration for some people.
Should you ingest Simply Earth oils?
No, Simply Earth doesn’t recommend you ingest their oils.
Essential oils are extremely potent and irritating to the body’s tissues. Therefore, they don’t recommend that you risk damage to internal organs, especially your stomach, throat, or tongue by ingesting essential oils.
Does this mean the oils are not pure? No – the truth is you should not ingest any brand of essential oils unless they are food grade. They’re highly concentrated, so you don’t need to ingest them to reap their benefits.
Instead, you can utilize Simply Earth essential oils and enjoy their benefits safely through aromatherapy and topical applications.
Are all essential oils the same?
No, we don’t think so. Unfortunately, far too many essential oils companies (not naming names) sell cheap, adulterated essential oils to save on manufacturing costs.
But Simply Earth is an ethical company that stands behind their products, because their goal is to help you create a more natural home.
As we have mentioned many times, you can be assured that Simply Earth oils are pure and this was key for us. For this reason and all of the reasons above, we feel very good about recommending them to our readers.
Does Simply Earth have a blog?
Yes, Simply Earth has a blog where they share a variety of essential oil recipes, tips and ideas for how to use their oils.
So even though you receive 6 recipe cards with each subscription box, if you misplace your cards, you can easily head over to the Simply Earth blog to find a recipe there, along with more in-depth information about their oils and special blends.
For instance, you can read more about the new Homebody EO Blend, and also explore and discover further information about the other ingredients they sell, such as the brand new Hydrolyzed Rice Protein for hair care.
Simply Earth also has a free e-book for beginners which helps you get started with using essential oils. You can find their free e-book here.
Is Simply Earth commitment-free?
Yes! You can skip a box or cancel anytime so you are not locked in.
If you’re worried that you’ll change you mind and the option of cancelling is important to you, this will be a key consideration before purchasing the box.
Luckily, the process of cancelling your Simply Earth subscription is very easy.
If for whatever reason, you want to stop receiving your monthly essential oil subscription box, you can cancel your subscription with Simply Earth in a few quick steps directly from your online account.
How do I contact Simply Earth?

I see you keep mentioning transparency. What I’d like to know is if this post is sponsored by Simply Earth or if the boxes were gifted to you. Otherwise, we won’t know if your review is impartial or not. Thanks!

Hi Emily, We understand your skepticism given you likely see a lot of reviews from bloggers. We were approached by 4 essential oil companies and we chose Simply Earth after extensive research. We weren't required to do this in-depth review. In fact, we could have just continued to use the oils they sent us in our recipes. We did this review because we were truly impressed with the oils and thought that since we had been using them for over a year, we could do a thorough review based on our experience. But you don't know us, so you don't know who we are because we would never recommend a product we didn't truly love or use ourselves. This is mentioned on our Disclosure page so yes, we've been transparent. For instance, we've been asked to photograph and review other products that we didn't like for a variety of reasons and so we declined. But again, you don't know us, so there is nothing we can really say to convince you this thorough review wasn't required nor requested. It was our own choice to provide it. And no, this wasn't a paid review either.
