What is low-PUFA skincare?

Put simply, low-PUFA skincare refers to products that are low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).

PUFAs include omega-3 fatty acids such as linolenic acid and omega-6 fatty acids such as linoleic acid.

The idea of low PUFA skincare is based on Dr. Ray Peat’s research on PUFAs, inflammation, and aging.

Why use skincare products low in PUFA?

Polyunsaturated fatty acids have an unstable molecular structure, making them easily damaged by light, heat and oxygen.

Damaged PUFAs generate free radicals, setting off a cascade of lipid peroxidation that goes on to damage other, previously healthy lipids.

In other words, oxidized PUFAs can damage the lipids in our skin.

Which skin oils are low PUFA?

Low-PUFA skincare oils include:

  • Squalane oil
  • MCT Oil (Capric/Caprylic Triglycerides)
  • Fractionated coconut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Marula oil
  • Olive oil

As well as solid fats and butters such as:

  • Beef tallow
  • Cocoa butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Shea butter
  • Lanolin
