- 1 part distilled water
distilled water is required to maintain freshness - 1 part vodka
the alcohol helps to disperse the essential oils into the water as well as acts as a preservative - 20-30 drops essential oils
see our recipe suggestions below - Dark glass spray bottle
- Mason jar
with lid for mixing - Small funnel
To begin, gather your (sterilized) supplies. In a mason jar, combine the vodka and the essential oils, using a essential oil combination of your choice. (Some oil combo suggestions are below.)
With the lid on your mason jar, shake the mixture vigorously. The essential oils won't mix into the water on their own, but when diluted in the vodka first, they will combine more efficiently. This is why it's important to only add the distilled water AFTER shaking the oils into the vodka. The alcohol will also help the scent linger longer, as well act as a preservative. (Also, please note, cheap vodka works just as well as the more expensive brands.)You should also shake your room spray prior to spritzing, so that the essential oils remain distributed in the liquid. We like to reuse little glass spritzer bottles for our room sprays but affordable bottles can also be purchased online, such as these ones.
Warning: Be careful with darker coloured essential oils (such as vanilla oleoresin) as they are more likely to stain fabrics, rugs and carpets. Also, don’t spritz your room spray on, or near wood furniture.
